National Poetry Month

April is National Poetry Month in Canada and the US. I enjoy poetry, and although writing it is not my forte I've decided to challenge myself to write a poem a day for the month of April. I will try my hand at different poetry styles, but be warned - the poet in me tends toward the ridiculous. The theme for Canada's NPM is Climate Change, so I might throw a few poems in about that.

If anyone else wants to join in the challenge, tell me about it here. I'd love to follow along.

Today's poem:

I count syllables and letters
put them in their proper place
For a moment I think
I am in charge
But the lines laugh at me
in iambic pentameter
I beg not to be left at their mercy
Come
What is it they say?
Poetry loves company

  1. I'm not much of a poetry person, so I will pass on the challenge. However, you write and travel along, I certainly will follow as I know you will do little wrong.

[Alan sighs, shakes head and goes to kitchen to retrieve first coffee of day...slinking back to the world of short stories]

And so happy to see you playing in poems all mnth along! I will join you, I spend every April alliterating and assonancing, things simply verboten in prose ;^)

I follow Robert Lee Brewer's prompts this month (most of the time). Look for a post from me later in the day.

    Peace, Linda

  3. I dunno, Laurita, it's hard enough remembering to brush my teeth every day for a month. Good luck with this, though... I'm sure you'll be wonderful!

  4. Alan, when it comes to writing, I'm really not much of a poetry person either. I love to read it, but I'm not very good at writing it. I'm hoping the challenge will help with my short fiction.

Linda, I will definitely be watching for your post. I won't try to keep up with you though. You'll have to bear with my amateur attempts. :)

Thanks, Cathy. It's going to be an interesting month I think. I rememer Pingu. Funny!

  6. Poetry...misery. Perhaps they are the same. (You can probably guess I'm not a poet.)

Hope you have a fun month!

  7. I love how your poem describes how writing always lumbers toward chaos and entropy.

  8. Entropy. Now there's a great word. My poetry always goes that way. :)

And is it just me, or does the word poetry look like it's spelled incorrectly?

  9. Love your challenge - still trying to decide if it is something I have time for - my heart says yes!!! but adding more to my schedule may be too much. One a day...hmm
Clowncar definitely is commended with the creative use of the word entropy - nice. lol

  10. Wonderful, Laurita. I was reading your poetry the otherday and I was thinking there must be some kind of national poetry...something. I love your words and flow. So I'll definately be following yours this month. I see Linda is also playing along. I need to go read hers too!
